A really underrated Scorsese film in my opinion. It’s got such an interesting and multi-layered plot. The acting was really good and the characters are very believable. It’s such a bizarre story that is really sort of frightening at times. The offbeat humor and dysfunctional romance was fun to watch. While it’s not as good looking or as intriguing as Taxi Driver, it was never supposed to be. It’s more of a straight-forward comedy and doesn’t confuse itself at one point. I really like the early criticism of the yuppie life and how fragile that world can come crashing down. It isn’t perfect, but few movies really are.

Tone tone tone…Scorsese nails it here.
Howard Shore’s score is very fitting for this dark comedy.
The performances are all delightful and you can’t help but feel for Griffin Dunne’s character, but the events that unfold are so wacky, so bizarre that you can’t help but laugh and enjoy the ride.
There’s so many little things along the way that you can pick up on. I may not have even got them all on this first viewing.
Also I simply loved Scorsese’s cameo.
There is so much to love in this film.

Dark comedy is turned pitch black in Martin Scorsese’s most under-rated picture. This is a tour de force of cinematic tension – it crawls under the skin, kicking and biting and never letting go. A lonely numbers-cruncher named Paul (Griffin Dunne) becomes trapped in a labyrinthine SoHo neighborhood, leading to an oddball odyssey of freak encounters, uncomfortable silences, and bad luck of the worst kind. The pacing is relentless, with Scorsese masterfully balancing the tension and the humor with exhaustive energy. Our only defense is to laugh when we should be screaming.
