Orlando Fortunato de Oliveira

Orlando Fortunato de Oliveira – was born in Angola. He is one of the pioneers of Angolan cinema. As a director, his films portray the era of colonialism. In his first film in 1982, “Memoria de um Dia” [memorial day], he tells the story of the massacre in Bengo Icolo in 1960, carried out by the Portuguese. In 1989 he made his first feature film, The Train From Canhoca, but for geopolitical reasons was not shown for over fifteen years. In the meantime he made a few documentaries, such as the first president of Angola Agostinho Neto. He has currently completed his new film “Batepá” which is set in Sao Tome et Principe. Batepa tells the history of the local colonial relations: segregation, repression, torture and political killings, which culminated in 1953. —afrykamera
