This one is WAY hotter.
There were some incredibly sweet moments throughout the film, but I was left feeling depressed. I still recommend it though.
Even if the narrative backbone of the film is very thin, the visual depiction of the characters is very subtle and compelling. I went along with the slow pace of the film. I didn't need to know or understand. It was like reading a haiku. One simple word suffices. I felt the same with this film.
A little unfocused compared to the other Koreeda films, but still entertaining and beautiful to look at.
soundtracknya oke bok' sayang, waktu lagi nonton film bagian akhir dvdnya rusak. bikin rusak mood buat nonton, rusak loading di otak tentang cerita film. pembentukan momentumnya jadi terhenti. ah ! kapok deh nonton film yg kayak gini hasil beli bajakan (curcol)
Everyone has a bad day ... Even the great Hirokazu Kore-Eda! Possibly his cinematic interests and priorities has changed now, this may open his work up to a different audience (yet sadly pull him away from his old).
Not even Bae Du-na's considerable charms and near-perfect derrière can save this film from wallowing in mediocrity. Koreeda has officially jumped the shark!
i wish i can have my own air doll.. the cute one like my king hyde sama HAIL HYDE.. i can play him all night long fufufufufu *pervert grin*
Well, the beginning was very good, the idea and the message that the movie conveys was interesting and poetic but my gosh the end was way too long and too bad ! It gave me the impression the movie was too short and that Kore-Eda had to fill the last minutes with...nothing ! Very disappointing in the end...that's a pity, I was very enthousiastic first...
I'm baffled and disappointed. Never expected that the most sensitive of directors, capable of describing the persistence of mourning and loss without a single explicit word like in maborosi, could make such a preaching and verbose movie. and the camera is floating endlessly with no purpose. I really can't recognise Koreeda here. to me After life was naif in the best possible way; this is naif in the worst!
Air Doll's cute/salacious premise is belied by its slugged tone--even the normal characters are apathetic to the point of abnormality. Reading the film for ideas is the wrong way to go when the film's real lift is in the cold luminosity of its images, which culminate in the tragic detachment of its ending.
Air Doll succeeds in establishing it's premise, exploring it's universe and it's laws. Nozomi is a useful device for commentary. She is our own consumer culture staring back at us. The other characters are fascinated by escapist media and technological distractions. But Nozomi has a puerile interest in reality, and through her earnestness the audience is given a renewed interest in humanity.
So what was the lesson here: "all Japanese men are pigs" or "relationships only work when one plays slave and the other master"? I mean, I get it, but it's too heavy handed here. Too cute and coy to be taken seriously.
Someone please let me know when there's news of a Region 1 DVD (or if the Japanese release can be found cheaply somewhere).
