João Viana was born in Angola in 1966. Graduated in law at the university of Coimbra and studied cinema in Porto. He worked in the areas of production, sound, storyboard, direction e scriptwriting. In 2007, he wrote the script Olhos Vermelhos for film director Paulo Rocha. He worked with prestigious film directors like Oliveira, Biette, César Monteiro, Schroeter, José Alvaro Seixas Santos, among others. He started to direct his own films in 2004 with the film A Piscina (in competition at the Venice Film Festival), co-directed with Iana Ferreira.
