Wenders makes another affecting road movie. It's equally as touching and heartfelt as Paris, Texas.
The innocent curiosity of a child against the cynicism and disinterest of an adult. All about rambling, clashing and finally bonding. Beautiful film.
Wenders is the King of the Road Movie and this early example from his filmography is one of his best and is widely considered to be one of the key films of the New German Cinema. A journalist with writer's block becomes the guardian of an 8 year old girl when her mother deserts them in New York. The odd couple travel back to Germany via Amsterdam and an unlikely friendship develops. A touching and bittersweet gem....

A movie that follows the inner travel of a man who's looking for a place in the world. A change to connect with an abandonned child turns out to be a quest for finding their way home. Also, magnific scenes and moments of celluloid that takes a look at the influence of American culture in post WWII Europe.
Not Wim Wenders' best picture (I prefer Paris, Texas, which is very similar but vastly more polished), but certainly a great piece of cinema.
A beautiful film of identity and belonging, even more poignant and thought-provoking than when I first saw it 20 years ago. We screened it last night in our community cinema and everyone I spoke with afterwards loved it.
I've actually come to the conclusion that this is Wenders' best film, greater even than Wings of Desire, Paris Texas or Kings of the Road. It's just sublime from start to finish, and has so many great images - Vogler destroying the TV; the melancholy of Lisa Kreuzer (Alice's mother); the endless travelling by car, plane or public transport. I love this film.
This film is art. When i first saw it, i was just like in front of a fabulous painting. Each shot, each landscape, and each face are just poetry.
