Synopsis

Despite the efforts of Ripley and the space marines in the film Aliens, an embryonic alien infiltrates the starship. It accidentally triggers the ship’s emergency systems, dropping the escape capsule to the surface of a nearby planet. Ripley finds herself in a prison colony peopled by a religious cult composed of former murderers and rapists. Meanwhile, the alien has managed to grow into a new and deadly form, and is picking off the weaponless prisoners. Ripley soon discovers, much to her horror, that the real danger is much more personal… —IMDb

David Fincher

David Leo Fincher (born August 28, 1962) is an American music video and film director known for his dark and stylish portraits of the human experience, particularly Fight Club (film) and Se7en.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Fincher was raised in Marin County, California. He moved to Ashland, Oregon in his teens where he graduated from Ashland High School.

Inspired by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Fincher began making movies at age eight with an 8 mm camera. Filmmaking seemed the perfect outlet for a kid who could spend all day drawing and loved to make sculptures, take pictures and tape-record. Fincher eschewed the film school route, getting a job loading cameras and doing other hands-on work for John Korty’s Korty Films. He next got a job at Industrial Light and Magic in 1980 with his first screen credit being for Return of the Jedi, and stayed until 1984. He left ILM to direct a dark commercial for the American Cancer Society, a grim hint of things to come, showing… read more

The third "Alien" lacks the fresh thrills of the first two, but Fincher does the best he can with a lifeless, obvious script. At its best, the film is visually mesmerizing, understandably the slickly shot and edited work of a director then best known for music videos. The threat of sexual violence hangs over the entire film, and the climactic set piece delivers the suspense absent from the film's first hour.

A watchable flick to be sure but it pales in comparison to the first two. Whereas Alien was a horror film and Aliens was an action flick, Alien 3 doesn't seem to know what the hell it is. That and the 1992 animated xenomorph hasn't held anywhere near as well as it's 1979 man-in-a-suit sibling.

A flawed masterpiece. No, it's not as good as the first two. Despite going through production hell, Fincher's handiwork can still be seen, and the horribly bleak tone worked for me in a big, bad way.

Actually quite enjoyed this film, against all expectations. While it probably won't be remembered as the magnum opus of the Alien films, it's a confident debut for Fincher, who did a surprisingly good job with a difficult situation.

not a classic, but its still a solid movie

This one isn’t a classic like the first two, but it’s still a really solid movie and very underrated (I don’t care what you guys think). Following up after a classic like ‘Aliens’ is pretty difficult…  read review

I recognize that ALIEN 3 is a flawed film, but I love it to death anyway. It completes Ripley’s character arc in a beautiful way, making her into a tragic figure. What people wanted out of a sequel…  read review
