Haha, took the words right out of my mouth. Except for a couple of cool scenes, was never big on Aliens, and Resurrection never got its due
After re-watching all four Alien flicks I need to reassess my opinion of Resurrection. Of course it pales in comparison to Alien & Aliens. But now, years after the fact, I find myself liking Resurrection much much more than Alien 3. Resurrection might be weird (Jeunet's weird visual sensibilities + Whedon's storytelling) but it had direction and the xenomorphs were much more Giger-esque than the dog beast in Alien 3.
Quite enjoyable, but the movie is let down by a weak script that seems to favour comedy for thrills. And to be honest, it was a mistake letting Jeunet do an Alien movie to begin with. I love Jeunet's other movies but on this one his zany visual style just hampers the movie. The underwater sequence is glorious though.
I suppose I liked it marginally better than 3, since Jeunet's sensibility is such a bug-nuts match for the "Alien" franchise. The cinematography is certainly rather stunning for 90's sci-fi. But Joss Whedon is someone that should have never been let near an "Alien" movie. I don't care what his acolytes say, his script here is terrible. This feels more like an "Alien vs. Predator" flick - silly and pointless.
I adore Jeunet's movies and it's amazing to see his style in a hollywood blockbuster such as the Alien franchise, a truly unique take on the series and I personally prefer this movie over Aliens and Alien3. In my view Aliens is the worst of the series, it has some okay action but the dialogue is beyond awful, Cameron should've stopped making movies after Terminator. Alien > Alien Resurrection > Alien3 > Aliens
This is extremely underrated from my point of view.I have seen the previous Alien films and the second one and the third one suck, but this one is actually a proper "resurrection" to the series.I liked not only because Jeunet's imaginary universe has no boundaries whatsoever, but the acting was good(especially Perlman) and Khondji's cinematography was terrific.
With the exception of Ron Pearlman's appearance, nothing else about this film has a trace of Jeunet's ingenuity. He is better suited for quirky dark comedies.
I can't imagine why Weaver accepted to be in this. It's almost a parody. But I agree with Stephen in one point. Much better than most of the average horror films. Ron Perlman is the high.
Joss Whedon is the only person who could have written this 4th instalment of the franchise. He's a pro at resurrecting dead, strong female characters. Also, notice how much he borrowed ideas from this when he worked on Firefly. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's stylish look and feel for the film helped make this not just another sequel and a worthy end to the Ripley story.
i was actually surprised how much i enjoyed this one, i had always stayed away, but it's way better than 3.
I would say watch 1,2 and this and skip 3, at least they try and repair the dammage done from the awful alien 3 in this and also brilliantly bring back the music, something sequels and franchises need to stop doing, dropping musical scores. I also like Ron Perlman in this and the bad guy from the original The Crow is great as the team leader with Winnona Rider as well.
