AALCC solves problem of not having a story by making all characters look and dress same to become one omni-character encompassing a spectrum of possible motivations, alignments, & reactions. Yuichi & Hoshino are our oppressed/oppressor entry points, but their individualities disintegrate into an Internet blur familiar to us from daily consensual shellacking by the Feed. We become by typing; evil is but one username.
The kids are not all right in this film. Mesmerizing and unforgettable for so many things: acting, direction, cinematography, music and story. A microcosm of sort of Japanese youth culture: bleak and hopeless, contrary to the powerful image of progress and elegance of this nation's economy. The film's ending is all for the audience to complete. But am all for a brighter hopeful future. Definitely.
A very intimate and unsettling venture into a coming-of-age hell. The tone of the film was pitch perfect.
one of the most vivid coming of age movies ever penned, dark and desolate, and foresees internet community culture before it is born. one of the best japanese movies of the late 90's.
way too long with some scenes that go absolutely nowhere, but also amazingly poetic and beautiful....sort of lulls you into a trance so you don't even mind the scenes that serve no real purpose...
while the films have one of the most interesting music selection and cinematography of this past decade, but the overlong running time ruined its chance to achieve perfection.
Not a perfect film but an interesting discovery that brilliantly captures teenage alienation. Some scenes are just brilliant but sometimes a little trimming wouldn't have hurt.
The scene where the kids go to Okinawa or something and the whole thing is done on this home video grade camera is so wonderful. One of my favorite scenes ever. This is a great movie, which is something that I never would have expected..
I have a strange obsession with Shunji Iwai. This, Love Letter, and Swallowtail are all some of my favorite films to come out of Japan. Probably one of the only good teen angst films out there as well.
I love Shunji Iwai movies. I remember seeing this twice in one day at the UA Galaxy in SF (on Van Ness.) Then returning the next day with friends to see it again. Great to see this in the theater. Sadly, the UA Galaxy is gone. Fingers crossed for a nice blu-ray of this (as it was shot digitally, it should look great in 10080p.)
It's soundtrack is awesome...The singer in the movie Lily ChouChou aka Salyu's songs are great!
