Synopsis

In the run-up to the 1972 elections, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward covers what seems to be a minor break-in at the Democratic Party National headquarters. He is surprised to find top lawyers already on the defense case, and the discovery of names and addresses of Republican fund organizers on the accused further arouses his suspicions. The editor of the Post is prepared to run with the story and assigns Woodward and Carl Bernstein to it. They find the trail leading higher and higher in the Republican Party, and eventually into the White House itself. –IMDb

Alan J. Pakula

Renowned for guiding actors to the Oscars and, as Robert Redford put it, bringing “sensitivity and intellect to seemingly intractable subjects,” Alan J. Pakula built a successful career that was cut short by his death in a car accident in 1998. With his restrained, thoughtful filmmaking style, Pakula weathered industry upheavals and audience tastes that often preferred anything but intelligent subtlety, leaving a legacy that includes All the President’s Men (1976).

Born and raised in New York, Pakula dabbled in high school theater, but he didn’t consider a show business career until he took a summer job at Leland Hayward’s talent agency. Pakula majored in drama at Yale, graduating in 1948. While working at Warner Bros. in 1949, Pakula directed a Los Angeles stage production of Antigone that caught producer Don Hartman’s eye. Hartman got Pakula a job reading scripts at MGM in 1950, and took Pakula with him to Paramount in 1951, where Pakula eventually got to produce his first… read more

I don't like many procedurals, but this one is definitely one of my favorites. It's a pleasure all over. Pakula makes journalists look so tough and cool. Then again, it was the 70's… maybe they were? Words as weapons, men honing their craft, and a stranger than fiction tale about a true event that was truly terrible - all this executed with great moviemaking talent for my money.

Rather dull and dreary.

I've come to realize how much I appreciate this film's restraint: the way the music only comes half an hour in, the 6-minute slow zoom into Redford's face as he juggles two phone calls, the endless montage of slammed doors, the willingness to light Deep Throat with just a sliver and an eyelight. Sometimes master filmmaking is holding back.

All The President's Men

Excellent. A determined and steady drive toward justice is always compelling in a drama. This one has the punch I also liked so much in “Frost/Nixon”. I always recall “All the President’s Men” as having…  read review
