Guilio Sacchi (Tomas Milian) is a small-time hood disillusioned with the crime syndicate for which he works. Looking to make some big money fast, he and some friends kidnap the beautiful Marilù (Laura Belli), the daughter of a billionaire and demand 500 million Lira as ransom. However, hot on his heels is Inspector Grandi (Henry Silva) a hardened cop who only becomes more hell-bent on catching Guilio and his gang with each corpse he finds. Director Lenzi reflects on the “Years of Lead” in Italy, a time when terrorists caused chaos and police action was judged as deficient.

Umberto Lenzi (born August 6, 1931), is an Italian film director who was very active in low budget crime films, peplums, spaghetti westerns, war movies, cannibal films and giallo murder mysteries (in addition to writing many of the screenplays himself).
Lenzi was born in Massa Marittima, Grosseto, southern Tuscany. He is the writer/director of two highly controversial exploitation films: Mangiati vivi (1980) and Cannibal Ferox (1981) as well as the director of the film adaptation of the Italian comic book Kriminal (1966). He was one of the first Italian directors to get involved in the Giallo film craze (along with Mario Bava and Dario Argento), and his “Man From Deep River” is credited as being the film that started the Italian “cannibal film” genre later popularized by Ruggero Deodato, Jess Franco and others. Crisply edited and paced; also frequently vicious. Tomas Milian's performance really is something, and the supporting cast (including Anita Strindberg and Ray Lovelock) hold it down too. (Points also for that pulsing score.) Basically takes most of the other poliziotteschi films I've seen thus far and kicks their teeth in. Didn't realize Lenzi had it in him.
