I know a lot of people, strangely enough, who started with this one. Not a good launching point. Hopefully you'll still explore his filmography.
Godard makes magic here in transforming 1960's Paris into an unknown dystopic landscape. A film of ideas, drawing on everything from Orwell to Marx, and one that is obviously still relevant, if not more so than before. Gets slightly sloppy towards the end, and the emphasis on love as the great solution is a little too contrived..
"Something's not in orbit in the capitol of this galaxy." There is something unavoidably quaint about Godard's essay in hard-boiled sf dystopia, but Alphaville wears its goofiness on its sleeve, and it loses no points for being dated. Kitsch it ain't -- not really, and not only because it's put together with the expected impeccable style. The fact is that we need its surprisingly hokey humanism now more than ever.
Frightening and thought-provoking, because it draws out the budding and sinister future which is already present.
Today I watched this film out of mere curiosity... I had seen WKW's short film " I traveled 9000 km to give it to you" and I'd been wanting to watch Alphaville since it is the movie playing in the theatre where the two lovers meet. What a wonderful surprise this was!!! I absolutely loved it and today I understand where many scenes from WKW 2046 originate from... Today I love Godard a bit more and WKW a bit less...

Interesting. Yeah, I definitely will. He's far too praised and prominent to dismiss; I still look forward to seeing his other films.
a strong precursor to many other over the top sci-fi and spy films. incredibly enjoyable.
This is Godard's "Wacky" movie...It is so absurd that makes me laugh but I can't stop watching it. Except the pool scene it is extremely original. It does really give the "Alien" effect at most alienating fashion. I really love this movie & it is on my "I miss a lot if I don't see" list.I have absolutely no idea WHY!:- IVAN JOHNSONNNN....!:-)))))
«I don't know what to say. They're words I don't know. I wasn't taught them. Help me.», what a remarkable masterpiece.
Did not understand it at all.. I just saw some references of some modern day film.. Maybe I should watch it again...
This is first Godard's film I have watched and I can't wait to see more of him. Fantastic movie!
So cold, icy, and yet warm. Why aren't there more sci-fi films like this one?
