Synopsis

A young girl is the sole protector of a very precious, large egg. Her lair is near a large, abandoned, decaying gothic city inhabited by restless shadows. A mysterious young man arrives one day, and eventually wins her trust. They converse sparsely about obscure philosophical and theological topics, and she shows him some astonishing fossils and works of historic and scientific art. The ending is a bit shocking, and very ambiguous, leaving many unanswered questions and tons of room for interpretation. —IMDb

Original

Mamoru Oshii

As a student, Mamoru Oshii was fascinated by the film La Jetée by Chris Marker as well as the films of Andrzej Wajda, Jerzy Kawalerowicz, Andrzej Munk and Ingmar Bergman. In 1976, he graduated from The Fine Arts Education School of the Education Department of Tokyo Liberal Arts University. The following year, he entered Tatsunoko Productions and worked on his first anime as animation director on Ippatsu Kanta-kun. In 1980, he moved to Studio Pierrot under the supervision of his mentor, Hisayuki Toriumi. During production of the Nils no fushigi na tabi (“Wonderful Adventures of Nils”) and Kagaku Ninja-Tai Gatchaman II TV series, Oshii first met longtime collaborators, writer Kazunori Itō and painter and character designer Yoshitaka Amano. Mamoru Oshii’s work as director and storyboard artist of the animated Urusei Yatsura TV series brought him into the spotlight. Following its success, he directed two Urusei Yatsura films: Urusei Yatsura 1: Only You in 1983 and Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful… read more

Stunning animation with a gothic style, lots of religious symbolism and very little dialogue making ample room for interpretation. Loved it.

i feel a little angry and hurt that i'd never heard of this film until last week! one of the most beautiful, atmospheric, mysterious and moving things i've ever seen. for me it puts something that's 'outside of allegory' in a nutshell. phew.

pure visual pleasure. like the hourglass sanatorium thrown into a heroin coma. i only wish oshii would create a body of work around this setting.

Angel's Egg (1985)

By REDLETTERPRINTS on February 23, 2011

The Japanese are forever wondering about Christianity. What is it? Who are we? Crosses – where do you put them? Can you arrange them in a semi-circle in your front lawn? Can they be used as guns? Should…  read review
