I agree with Jesper, to reduce this (or any film on this site) to a one line “oh I hated it because it hated women” is ridiculous, uneducated, unwanted and unnecessary for The Auteurs. Before commenting on a film, it would make sense for one to “marinate” on the viewing experience as well as consider comments given from the director himself:

That aside, having heard much of the turmoil that followed the initial screening in Cannes, I sat in the middle of the front row for one of the re-screenings and was not disappointed. My mouth was open for the majority of the film out of sheer awe and excitement and I felt bad for whomever was sitting next to me because I couldn’t stop my leg from vibrating and my body from physically reacting to the film. Despite a few laughs from the audience at one or two more ridiculous parts of the film, the cinematography, acting, structure, sound and score were superb. The negativity is directed towards (and stems from) mental illness and Fear itself, not women – it’s just the female character in this film who is the vessel for the exploration of an unstoppable, unmedicated slide into extreme, violent, and gut-wrenching depression.
