As a trivia, this is one of the few films that late Pt. Ravi Shankar gave music for along with the more famous Apu Trilogy and Gandhi.

Behind every successful man there is a woman. How much ever cliched this line may sound, Mukherjee has tried to pay tribute to the woman who sacrifices her talent and ambitions for the love of her husband and his professional success. At the same time, he seems to be signalling a change of times. The woman was not going to remain chained in this patriarchal society for too long. She demands an equal respect for her sacrifices at least from her own husband. Some men seem to have started realizing this, even if in hindsight. Surely, its a reflection of a gender equation that was changing fast and for the better. Mukherjee would go on to testify this in his future films.
