My father was literally a rocket scientist who helped build the first Apollo space shuttle. So anything to do with NASA interests me. What I love about this film (apart from my fascination with 60’s culture, as well) is that it’s so endlessly gripping. The first time I saw it was in the theater and it blew me away. I recently watched it again, and it had the same effect. Ron Howard doesn’t get much credibility as an auteur, per se, he’s often dismissed as fluff and Hollywood. I am in the Howard camp for his ability to tell a story in the most entertaining way possible. Not to mention Ed Harris’ impact whenever he’s on screen, trying to bring the guys home.
