And to think it actually happened to a young Malle..."kick in the guts" might be an understatement. The world of childhood collapsed in that single moment.
This film shook me more than any other film in recent memory. The story of a boy coming to terms with prejudice, and being confronted with the stark reality around him. It's a brutal depiction of a loss of innocence, but one that everyone should experience.
A moving and important story simply told.An example of how when we are betrayed,we can strike back and hurt even the innocent.
Left me deeply moved. A powerful period drama (WW II is a very interesting period) with pitch perfect story and interesting characters revolving around.
That ending was like a kick in the guts. Such a perfectly understated and bittersweet film...

An artful reminiscence of a traumatic event. Through Malle's direction, you can tell that elements from his past surfaced through this film to haunt the screen. A well-paced story that exemplifies the coming-of-age drama without the cliche'd sexual undertones and the larger-than-life violence. Everything is done to the point and the representation of young teens living amongst each other is masterfully done. Great.
One of the most heartbreaking and beautiful films I've ever seen. The kind of movie that will stay with you for a very long time. Simple, never sentimental, and devastating. Everyone should see this film, especially teenagers. One of the best films ever made about growing up, and all the consequences that come with it. It makes most other films about childhood seem meaningless in comparison.
The description of this film always sounded so typically art house that I put off seeing it for awhile. If it wasn't going off Netflix instant play tomorrow I probably would have put it off for I don't know how many years. I absolutely loved it though. Other than being touching and blah blah blah....(which it was) just as a period film alone it worked. I had no clue what occupied France was like...now I do.
I was definitely going to put this off for some time too, but like you said...Netflix likes to inconvenience people smh.
the one movie every American high school french class insists on showing multiple times.
This movie blows me away every time i watch it. It's not only moving, but incredibly well done. the story in of itself was poetic but the cinemetography and the acting all together make it truly a work of art.
incredible film. Very funny and the same time uniquely sensitive and moving. The ending is perfect!
I'll keep this short...if you didn't cry at the end of this movie you don't have a soul! MASTERPIECE! Fuck all the detailed analysis this movie is pure POETRY in MOTION. What the hell are you still doing reading the reviews go out and BUY THIS FUCKING MASTERPIECE RIGHT NOW and appreciate the genius that is Louis Malle! Goodbye my children..........
