The intertextual Bergman film. Performs as a parallel to Persona, with a structure that reminds one of Cries and Whispers. Admits the shame of being an artist just as Through a Glass Darkly did, and demanded more from Ingrid Bergman than Ingmar, like Wild Strawberries did with Victor Sjostrom.
What a film!?.. Emotions are bursting out all of a sudden because of hidden guilt and anger.. Liv ullmann and ingrid bergman's performance is superb!!..
One of Bergman's strongest films. Continuing a trend of mixing theater and cinema, it does not deal with theater directly, but its staging repeatedly reminds us of it, specially in this chamber drama genre. Ullmann and Bergman are intense and haunting. The story, while mostly bitter, is ultimately satisfying, and the film gives off that magic Nordic feel that defines Bergman, while maintaining a harsh realism.
Perhaps it's my favourite Bergman movie. Everything is just so damn fine. Mood, storytelling, plot, cinematography. What's more, performance is the biggest advantage of the movie! I've never seen such a good and convincing acting. Incredible skills of Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann caused that I forgot it's only a movie. True masterpiece.
Like most of Bergman's films from the 70's, Autumn Sonata is more recorded theater than cinema.
At first you feel the wind pick up, you feel a certain moistness in the air, and while you suspect something, you can't quite predict what's in store. Then the clouds thunder, the wind roars, & before you know it you're caught in a storm. Afterward, you try to pick up the pieces but you're unsure if life will ever be the same. Finally you look up & you see a rainbow in the sky. You smile. There's always another day.
It's beautiful, the shades of yellow, the disconcerting framing, the distorted and uncomfortable close-ups. I finally understand what makes Bergman's Chamber Dramas so great. They have a raw emotional power to them rarely equaled. However, I've reached a point where I'm beginning to find Bergman's unrelenting pessimism to be quite immature which may have prevented me from enjoying this one fully.
The text, original Bergman's almost a play is perfect (including the Oscar-nominated). Beautiful photography (shades of yellow as it could not be a movie that takes place in autumn). And the interpretations: the stronger film. Watch the scene where mother and daughter are seen at the piano: the amount of emotion on stage, seen only from the expressiveness of the actresses. Impressive...
I liked it allright but one of his more forgettable stories and likewise for the characters.
hormonal drearsville. this is probably (ingmar) bergman at his most facile - didactic, overly theatrical, working from a script that manages to simultaneously be drenched in angst and devoid of any finer subtext.
The Dialogue in this film is poetic..... Ingrid Bergman is still beautiful even at that age "GILF!" The English to Swedish transitions were trippy but made sense! Beautiful movie watch it this "Holiday Season" with your own Mother and reveal your true feelings to her the moment the movie ends. And if your Mother is Dead in the Physical form, wait until 2012 because we'll all be united for the next Earth!
No idea why Bergman said it was not a good movie. Everything he does best is in there. It still feels more unique than any White Ribbon of the world...If you want to enjoy White Ribbon, don't watch a Bergman movie first !
Brilliant. A touching and emotionally drenched movie about a mother-daughter relationship.
