Synopsis

Raju lives as a derelict as a result of being estranged from his bitter father, a district judge, who threw Raju’s mother out of the house years ago. Raju shacks up with a Dacoit (pickpocket bandit) as his surrogate father only to realize that the man is actually responsible for the original misunderstanding between his parents. Raju kills him, and then tries killing his father, but fails, is arrested, and is taken to court right before his very own father, who presides there as the Judge. Raju has his childhood girlfriend as his legal representative, and the onus is now on his father, who must pass judgment without showing any personal sentiment.

Has any audience viewed Awara's musical dream sequence w/o thinking, "That's trippy"? You don't have to explain a musical; the music & dancing stand in for pure emotion; and we grasp that pure emotion is often batshit. Even so, Raj Kapoor's decision to insert his vision of heaven & hell in the middle of a gritty courtroom drama strikes me as more batshit than average, just a Manhog shy of a Jim Woodring cartoon.

Poverty breeds criminals, people are branded and labeled just because of what their ancestors were, and most of us can't escape our fates but can always start over. The whole thing is too melodramatic, farfetched and campy at times but the musical numbers are to die for and I rarely have this much fun watching a film. Watch out for the extraordinary dream sequence.

Anyone seen the 193 mins version? It seems my copy is the UK version which running around 168 mins. But the dream sequence is something to savor again.
