Heureusement, quelques années plus tard, Malick réalisera de grands films.
An odd little film. There's an absolutely beautiful moment when Martin Sheen pours liquid on a piano and the keys play a clattering little tune. My favourite moment in the film.
Among many other things, it's an interesting exercise on the theme of "lack of control". From one point of their lives, things just build up out of control, deaths are left behind them as a sign of their current lack of choices. Starting from one "bad" decision, everything just comes and they seem to have no other way of dealing with life if not by the rules they wrote themselves long before, without even knowing it.
For such an excellent performer, Sheen's film career has never reached the heights his talent deserves. This is undoubtedly the stand-out film on his CV. Hailed as one of the most impressive directorial debuts ever, Malick's serene collision of beauty and violence drew up the blueprint for the rest of his enigmatic career. Two lovers go on a killing spree after the girl's father objects to their union. Spellbinding..
"Boy if i could sing a song like that, if i could sing a song about the way i feel right now, it would be a hit..."
Je vais me faire lyncher, tant pis.
As a complete Malick nut, I still consider this to be his worst film...or, I should say, the one I find least satisfying. It's a good film, and don't mean to claim otherwise by calling it his "worst," but I just think that his other films improve on his technique and style. What I have noticed more about this film the more I watch it is the dark comedy aspect - Kit's comments are ridiculous yet funny.
Check out Kartina Richardson's video essay on BADLANDS: http://t.co/havi19H It's a really lovely contemplation of Kit's revolt against time itself.
I enjoyed the movie, though I think it's very overrated. It is obviously influenced by Bonnie&Clyde, you can see Malick say thanks to Penn in the end. The film itself visually beautiful sometimes, but on it's a little bit average on characters, and by far not poetic and mysterious.I actually didn't like Days of heaven, another silly, childish, but the same time visually beautiful movie.
What a magnificent work of art. Truly a magical, dark, wonderful film. Malick is incredible.
Terrence Malick's feature debut elevates the low-budget violent road movie of the 70s to poetic new heights. It's not a perfect film, the deliberate pacing is sometimes entrancing, sometimes maddening (a trend in Malick's films that continues to this day). But with its superb naturalistic performances and majestic visuals, it mostly lives up to its lofty reputation.
of all the on-the-run films this one strikes me as the most compelling. Others tend to look outside and the way the public and the media reacts to the crimes. This is interior. Martin Sheen's character that Malick has created is marvellous, all the violence and killing without explanation or reason yet his character is still loveable and endearing.
