what's his best in your opinion? i think barry lyndon is the best :)
2001, of course. Probably the greatest accomplishment in the history of American cinema
Everyone always kicks this one around, but it's the only Kubrick film I watch fairly frequently. I still think it's his best work.
I love many of Kubrick's film, but Barry Lyndon seems to me a film constantly weighed down by its quest for pictorial perfection. Whenever I watch it, I can always see tense crew members just out of shot in this, the umpteenth take, chewing their nails hoping "*please* this time, please nothing go wrong". I don't think films should be like that.
Beautiful film, it achieves on images alone what many films as a whole can't accomplish.
Simply a stunningly well made picture. It's an extraordinary tale of the rise and fall of Redmond Barry. I can definitely see why this is Scorsese's favorite Kubrick. It nearly maps out the structure of his mob classics. My only problem with this film is that it doesn't "feel" like a Kubrick film. Which isn't to say it's bad, it just doesn't transport me to the "Kubrick Universe" I'm so infatuated with.
Slow going but extremely rewarding - brilliant on so many levels. I didn't want it to end. One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen.
Shameful that when Kubrick's work is recalled Barry Lyndon often fails to get much of a mention, if any at all.
A prominent feature in Kubrick's films, and the reason he is considered cold, is that he is focused on the behaviours of characters, their patterns - the drama shifts when we witness behaviour changing, when anomalies are spotted, and drama builds when we see behaviours escalate, but we never really know the characters. Barry Lyndon is Kubrick to the extreme, for better or worse. The Kubrickiest :')

"A lady who sets her heart upon a lad in uniform must prepare to change lovers pretty quickly, or her life will be but a sad one. This heart of Lischen's was like many a neighboring town and had been stormed and occupied several times before Barry came to invest it." Best Kubrick ever.
This is going to look absolutely amazing when the new transfer is on bluray. For a number of reasons, for it being given the proper aspect ratio and the amount of detail that is there due to the lenses. With the special lenses used specifically for Barry Lyndon, developed by Nasa Kubrick was able to light using only candles for instance and have virtually no depth of field. This will look phenomonal.
Just love the visual art design, from top to bottom. Those candlelight scenes still look amazing and to this day have not been beat.
Has anyone else noticed how the aristocracy lining up to meet the king looks a lot like the prisoners' line-up for the minister in A Clockwork Orange, the grunts lining up for the drill Sgt. in Full Metal Jacket, and the soldiers for the general in Paths of Glory. It's a striking motif.
