A very interesting movie and easily the most abstract the Coen Brothers have ever gotten. The story starts out extremely normal and essentially average, but grows into this Eraserhead-like journey. It manages to really capture a wonderful sense of awkwardness, which it had to with such a nervous and neurotic character. Every Time Barton interacts with someone it is not quite normal, something blocks him from becoming a fully functional human being. The symbolism, while overly apparent, is extremely effective and interesting to look at. It’s not just a simple story of a man writing a script, there’s so much more to it than that.

This movie rules. Definitely not the best Coens movie or my personal favorite, but John Goodmen and John Tuturro fucking rule in this movie. Makes me want to sit down and right something just to experience the inner turmoil of writers that the Coens so beautifully capture in this film. The scene at the end with the flaming hallway is also cinematic brilliance. John Goodmen standing off in the distance, showing a scary silhouette is the ultimate stage effect that can just chill the viewer to the bones.
