A pleasure for the senses. Keeps you on your toes. Very thought provoking. The character acts are mesmerizing.
I saw this one when it was released in theaters and dindn't like it much. I was young and stupid I guess. The film is just great.
The Coens took symbolism to another level with Barton Fink.. I honestly didn't expect it. It builds up gracefully, ambiguously... Loved it.
this is one hell of a film. up front advice is to really enjoy this movie as a whole, but afterwards, try to think about what this film means to YOU. there are many different interpretations (which I cant really say here) except for that its about self-fulfillment and rejection, simultaneously. its a beautiful Coen film. I need to see more. if you have ever been a writer, you will appreciate this film.
don't even try to find hidden moral or sense in this story.don't even try to think while you watching it. just watch. and enjoy the atmosphere of the movie. it's like a journey to somebody's head full of tensions, open ended questions, absurd, drama and mess. just like everyone's head. i do like the coens for that.
Just give this a watch having bought it a few months ago; not too bad. I think that the acting is great and when its funny/engaging it stands up to other Coen brothers films, but these moments are too few and far between for it to stand alongside the likes of Raising Arizona and Fargo. 6/10
Their best movie by far, and the last film the Coen Brothers made before becoming incredibly obnoxious.
Among the greatest movies of all time. In my top 10 movies ever made. A pure genius work of art. The Coen's finest achievement. Jesus I love this movie.
The Coen's are generally top notch and most of their films (Ladykillers notwithstanding) are better than most and solid character studies with relatively interesting stories and imaginative plots. Barton Fink stands out as among their best, solid writing and specific characters with a smooth and relentless plot that washes over you and leaves you wanting to know what happens after the credits role.
"I'm buildin' a levee. Gulp by gulp. Brick by brick. Puttin' up a levee to keep that ragin' river of manure from lappin' at my door."
A self-absorbed playwright is lured to Hollywood and what does he get? Hell? The truth about himself? Shattered illusions? I’m new but was certain the hyper IQ-ed English and film majors here would have solved this funny, exquisitely produced, Palme d’Or-winning puzzle by now. It's The Gods’ most intriguing work; but they’re not talking. So, like the goy’s teeth, consider this a friendly nudge. What’s it all mean?
now look at them high ratings. --may contain spoiler--But sorry, could afford only 3 stars. Unsatisfied, that's the main cause. No real ending, that's another. But couldn't blame them coens for leaving it hanging, it's no real but its probably the best for this film.
Started out kind of slow and I didn't follow what the story was trying to give me. However, the screenplay was alright; maybe perhaps I just didn't understand the whole grand scheme of Barton Fink and Charlie Meadows. Acting was superb: John Tuturro, John Goodman, Michael Lerner and Tony Shalhoub.
