Not to mention Prince! Hahaha, very camp indeed.
Remember Jack Nicholson dancing on his visit to the museum? I'll stick to "Mask of the Phantasm".
20 years plus on still a triumph of production design (Anton Furst) and art direction. Exceptionally shot by Roger Pratt. However what in 1989 was considered a more serious take on the Batman mythlogy is just pure camp itself now in the wake of the Nolan films. Nicholson hams it up in a fun performance at the expense of everyone else especially Keaton and Basinger. Time certainly not on Burton's side here.
I used to watch this movie all the time when I was kid. I watched it again about a week ago for the first time in a long while, and I suddenly noticed a lot of what's dorky about it... But I also remembered how fucking awesome this is at the same time. Jack Nicholson as the Joker + the fact that it's a Batman movie + soundtrack by Prince = pretty legit.
It's interesting to see this film after the Christopher Nolan reboot, because it's as good, but with a different approach. I just love Gotham City with this gothic weird graphic style, visually more interesting than the post-modern design on Begins and Dark Knight.
Today I'd probably say something along the same lines but much kinder. Like "It's a little rough around the edges, but when it's great it's on fire." Great entertainment.
Defenitly a breaking point. Batman would never be the same after this dark view from the superhero came out.
Re-visiting this movie was sad, so sad... Such a horrible, boring experience. It was like watching again the cartoons you use to love when you were kid and realizing they were shit. Every year Tim Burton goes a little bit deeper in the list of shame... And I thought that "Batman Begins" was bad...
Ouh Yes! I really think Batman Begins is bad, really bad. Even worst than this one. At least Burton was able to create the aesthetics for film in Batman movies. But Batmanb Begins, apart from a few very simple action scenes (if you want action go for John Woo, Tarantino, Dead Alive, etc...) Batman Begins is a huge joke. My favorite scene is when Batman before becoming Batman goes to that bar to face that mob boss... Sooooo bad, so cheap. And lets don't get started with "The Dark Knight", amazingly overrated crap, like Inception.
Also, you know that shot after Batman kills like twenty people by blowing up Axis chemicals (which is awesome; I love how Batman doesn't give a fuck if he kills in the Burton movies), where he turns around in front of the Batmobile and the helicopter spotlight shines on him? Classic. His stance, the way his cape flutters... that's what movies are about. I always want that shot to last longer.
Perhaps the most visually stunning of all superhero films, although Tim Burton's complete ineptitude at shooting action scenes is on full display. Keaton is the best Batman. Elfman's score is legendary. The scene where the Batmobile drives through the concrete wall is as good as movies get.
This film is dope, a genuine classic! Take a look at the cast, it wouldn't be better.
Batman done right, stop fixing things that arent broke, dropping elfman's score was the only mistake of the batman franchise and going through too many actors as batman.
Terrific batman rebirth by Tim Burton, forget silly made for reboot fanboy Nolans version, 1 and 2 are done right and maybe if your really drunk batman and robin lol (actualy i thought clooney at least looked the most like wayne out of all the actors that played wayne). the only bad thing is wayne is a little off comedic in a couple parts, forgiveable do to nicholson and the terrific score and costumes.
"Batman" is very much a comic book film, but it works. The style is pretty cheesy and the effects look quite dated. When it comes down to it, there are good characters, a good story, and a great villain. Nicholson is fantastic as The Joker and every bit just as scary and twisted. Keaton does a good job, and a young Burton makes a success. I love the soundtrack. Perfect.
Who else thinks that it would be great if one day in a few years from now, Burton made another Batman film?
