Empathetic psychiatrist Dr. William Rivers (Jonathan Pryce) works in a British military mental institution during World War I, treating shell-shocked soldiers and returning them to battle. One of of his patients is Siegfried Sassoon — one of Britain’s most famous wartime poets. Tormented with the enormity of his task (the war stories are quite graphic), Rivers teeters close to the edge of his own mental breakdown.
