I know what you mean. I liked it less than I thought I would too. It's full of good ideas though.
I enjoyed this in theaters 13 years ago. Re-watching the new Criterion Edition tonight really drove home how BRILLIANT it still is. I haven't particularly enjoyed anything else Spike has directed since this, except "ADAPTATION" and that wasn't as strong as this. I'm really glad Charlie Kaufman is directing his own insanely good scripts now (o hai "SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK").
I just love the atmosphere around the characters, something so obscenely normal about it. Great.
this is some kind of really really crazy shit that mess with your brain sometimes
I can't believe the creator of Jackass directed this. This strange magical realist fable was quite delightful and entertaining if not a tad pretentious. I enjoyed it, though, it's a great deal of fun; especially when Malkovich sees himself.
it's a very interesting movie & also a nice idea - i totally prefered the second half of the movie & the absolute best scene is, when Malkovich is seeing himself..!

This is pure imagination! It's inspired, amazingly funny and ultimately kind of terrifying. I loved it!
Unfortunately I don't think it maintains its sense of wonder for the film's entirety however the lengths the film goes to with the ideas of becoming someone else are impressive with the parallels to puppetry/acting and especially the approach to sexuality, and Charlie Sheen cast as the voice of reason is the joke that keeps on giving.
It's nice, enjoyable, and played with some very interesting ideas. Still, this is my least favorite work by Kaufman.
Orangey, you call it "pretentious" and self-indulgent, which is funny to hear from a Godard fan. You're cynical and backwards. If this film is anything, it's charming and what else would you want?
A wild romp from beginning to end filled with quirky, unique and generally disturbed characters, this is the kind of film you recommend to your friends and family and when they ask you what it is about you tell them to watch it and decide for themselves. The trailer suggests a glimpse of fractured pieces but the only true way to enjoy this film is a screening with no distractions.
i love Kaufman's Style of taking a seemingly simple idea ( I.E. getting to be someone else, or having part of your brain be erased) and making it very complex. He is both innovative and energetic. Truly a genius.
