With the fascist movement on the rise in 1930s Italy, a man and his family leave for America — and end up in Marseilles, France. Desperate for work, Orfeo Mancini (Jacques Gamblin) is reduced to taking a job as a laborer for a land tycoon who once courted his wife (Yaël Abecassis). Their struggle worsens as Orfeo’s employer — an Italian expatriate — becomes a Mussolini supporter, leaving the Mancini family desperate to find freedom.
