Or actually turns out to be an argument against slut shaming, now that I've unraveled the ending...
Highly erotic, beautifully shot and wonderfully acted. I always seem to be heavily impressed with what Buñuel offers me. Loved it.
First watched this eight years ago on the television. My introduction to Bunuel. Even more special: My introduction to Mlle. Deneuve! Love & Adoration at first sight and still one of my favourite women in ALL HISTORY OF CINEMA AND SPACE AND TIME AND GALAXIES AND COSMOS FOREVER AND ALWAYS!! (Sorry.) Also Quite, Quite Special: Pierre Clementi!! (Mmmm...) JE T'ADORE!! JE T'AIME!! S&M!!
What starts off as a sensual, intelligent depiction of a woman's sexual liberation becomes an archaic exercise in slut shaming during the melodramatic third act. Not my favorite piece of arthouse erotica.
Or actually turns out to be an argument against slut shaming, now that I've unraveled the ending...
Only found the scenes between Clementi and Deneuve noteworthy in an otherwise uneventful film.
Wonderful example of subtle but potent eroticism. Bunuel composes with his audiences unconscious desires rather than explicit exploitation.
An absolute favorite of mine, with a spellbinding performance by the beautiful Deneuve. The Criterion blu-ray transfer is gorgeous and comes highly recommended! The extras on the disc are worth checking out, too.
Catherine Deneuve stars in one of her most iconic roles as an upper class French housewife whose secret sadomasochistic fantasies lead her to become a classy prostitute in the afternoons while her husband is away. Bunuel's surrealistic tendencies may have mellowed somewhat by this point in his career, but the blurring between fantasy and reality is deliciously ambiguous.
The scene with the buzzing box is gorgeous! One of the best movie scenes ever, and I mean it!
“On ne s’ennuie jamais dans un bar. Ce n’est pas comme dans les églises où l’on reste seul avec son âme”
A married lady, who can unleash her sexual fantasies not on her husband, but only as a prostitute during the day.
Could Catherine Deneuve possibly be any more beautiful? I think not. Brilliant film.
Used to the wry and cynical humor that is most exemplified in his later French and Mexican films, Luis Bunuel's "Belle De Jour" exhibits a somber straighforward narrative that lacks the comic surrealistic qualities he is often known for. But because he still presents a powerful subject without as much black humor seething beneath the surface, the results were quite jarring; ultimately deserving a second viewing.
Sure, it got the Advantages of having Catherine Deneuve on the cast. But it is, unfortunately, less satirical and less dreamy than another film of Bunuel. So i found it just an OK one from him.
A dryly amusing surrealist fantasy. All slightly pedantic, but a more structured narrative approach to the usual bourgeois-bashing. A good starting point for potential Bunuelians and home to an iconic image or two.
An erotic encounter..a sexy performance..an intriguing&mysterious plot.. a Bunuel's finest.
For a movie that has no nude scenes, this is the most erotic piece of cinema I've ever seen. I am just in awe of Bunuel"s auteurship as he takes the role of director and screenwriter in this brilliant adaptation.
Like a 90 minute dream sequence. Fantastic film, not very erotic for an erotic film. Catherine Deneuve shows she is both a great actress and a goddess.
