Eric Roberts stars as one of five members of a U.S. karate team that’s handpicked to compete in an international martial arts competition in South Korea. As the team members become distracted by personal problems and racial tensions during their preparation for the big showdown, their coach (James Earl Jones) urges them to keep it together and support one another. Also stars Sally Kirkland and Phillip Rhee (who co-wrote the screenplay).
Even as a martial arts buff, I avoided watching this movie for years because I figured it was more of an inspirational sports drama than a kung fu flick. But no, it turns out "Best of the Best" is legit. It has enough spinning kicks to satisfy the average action junkie but, beyond that, the story contains a fair amount of heart, anchored by some solid performances from James Earl Jones, Eric Roberts, and Phillip Ree
