The realism, performances by non-professionals, and almost Chaplin-esque ending are just a few things that makes this a masterpiece.
A humanistic masterpiece by Italian Neo-Realistic auteur Vittorio De Sica. the Bicycle Thieves is a nigh cathartic experience for the viewer. The complete review is present at:

The crushing disappointment and embarrassment he felt in himself when he finally realised through his desperation what kind of man he'd allowed himself to become in his son's eyes was overwhelmingly sad.
Bicycle Thieves takes an atom and forms a galaxy.
The little boy's facial expressions kill me. I cried when he hit him, so sad.
The most emotionally devastating movie using non-actors in the main roles. Every time I see the little boy reach for his father's hand at the end....the tears just start falling. A simple expression of a complex love for a father that has been publicly humiliated. I love that.
not for the usual movie goer but this film was absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful.
Oh my gosh, this movie! How dare de Sica use such an adorable kid to play with my heartstrings! \(TA T )/
Amazing. Plays with universal guilt a lot. Not a happy ending which I love as well.
One of the most moving films I've seen for a while.
It takes a prominent place in movie history, blending a moment in time with a personal perspective. A perfect example of the power of film to show a truth with fabricated scenarios.
I think I’ve been so accustomed to watch a movie with a good ending or solved with good solution. This one doesn’t come with that and that’s actually what makes this one stands out. Important film.
Tender, heartbreaking, moving...just an incredible film, easily my favorite from De Sica.
Which film do you think is more sad this or Umberto D?
one of the most simple but moving, saddening and real films I've seen
Inspiring, lively, real.
Touching and timeless story taking place in post-war Italy.
Story that will not lose its message and quality over the years.
Definitely in my top 10.
My god, probably the saddest ending of any film
Better than the second time. Extremely depressing but an incredibly well-done piece of Italian neo-Realist movement.
Just saw this for the first time since college. It's a very good film, but somehow it's diminished in some way. (Maybe the point doesn't have as much impact as it once did for me?)
Great example of Italian Neo-Realist cinema.
How did so many people give this 3 stars? They're confused.
Watching The Bicycle Thieves felt a hell of a lot like being used as a human chew toy for an hour and a half. Don't get me wrong, its very well-made but if there was ever a movie that needed a hug/happy ending this is it. Requiem For a Dream scarred my mind. The Bicycle Thieves scarred my soul. Unfortunately as great as both of them are I probably will never watch either again...
this is cinema , this the beauty of the cinema , the magic of cinema , the cinema in its most human form....this is something really wonderful , really emotional..........very simple in its vision but really giant in its message...... a movie for all ages ............ for all human beings.
The only movie that could bring tears to my eyes just by thinking about it. If there was a list of the only ten perfect movies ever made, this would be on it.
C'è poco da dire...
semplicemente...
QUI E' NATO IL CINEMA D'AUTORE ITALIANO!!!
grazie Vittorio.
Depressing but worth it. A classic
Hit me with some Italian neorealism, baby. yeah.
why anyone would EVER translate this as "The Bicycle Thief" is beyond me..
The more I watched this, the more I liked it. I've been trained since birth to expect happy endings from stories like these, and even though I had a feeling I wasn't going to get one, it didn't stop me from hoping.
