VOLUPTE NOIR

A very discerning appraisal. I just revisited this after some years. The splendor of course is in the music.
Really good. I liked the opening especially, the ending dragged a teeeny bit in comparison. The use of mythology was awesome and the constant dancing was amusing. Also, I loved the artistry in the visuals, like the shot of Orpheus and Euridice in the palms at the foot of the hills at the end. Very nice 8D
There's a lot of commentary about the spectacle and the spirited music. Yet it's the sobering third act that does it for me -- when Carnival is over and the make-believe of costumes has lost its lustre. The shimmering veil is yanked away, revealing the gritty reality of life in a favela even as the mythology of Orpheus and Eurydice continues to play out. Camus finds splendor in the squalor and vice versa. Powerful.

lyricism, magic, love, death, the real flavour of latin american joy for living. A tragedy in vivid colours and heavenly notes.
If only more musicals from the 40's & 50's where like this: Lots of singing and dancing only without an actual "musical number" every two seconds. Wasn't a fan of the tin pan alley
Camus did a good job at making foreign films bright and colorful for the first time, as well as introducing the bossa nova to the US. Also, it has nice landscapes.
Magical, timeless, vibrant, hypnotic, gorgeous, riveting & genuine are just some of the words I would use to describe this great film....the final scene with the kids is simply perfection! who else felt like dancing?
Such an amazing and timeless film. Just thinking about the final scene fills my heart with emotion. The children are playing Orpheus's guitar to "make the sun rise". In the background, Orpheus's young animals can be seen running down the hillside into the distance. This film is so full of scenes that are captivating to both the eye and the heart. Beautiful film. Plus, the incredible music by Vinicius de Moraes!
Fantastic! I feel compelled to research more mythology and watch this again several times. Comparison- Black Orpheus & Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet Example 1 - Mira is screaming to Saraphina while she is trying on her costume for Carnival & Lady Capulet is prep. for the party and screaming "JULIET". Pre party chaos, screaming, dresses of Serafina and Lady Capulet. Was Luhrmann influenced by Black Orpheus?
So vibrant. Beautiful leads, wonderful music, and locales bursting with energy and life.
I found this film to be very visually vivid and appealing. It was almost like an exhibition/musical about the classic Greek myth. The ending, in my opinion, was so beautifully done-both lovers perish, yet the children still dance and sing as the sun rises. The celebration of life and nature continues.
I own this movie and I am guarding it as the most precious item in my possession. Amazing! Coming from Surinam I now moved to the Netherlands and was introduced to the samba there and every time I'm dancing the samba, I see myself as Orfeu Negro:-)
Found this at the library & fell in love. The film has the finest use of color (that I’ve seen) since Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The cast is gorgeous. The music is beautiful. The performances are ridiculous. And the ending is probably the cutest scene of all-time.
Lively international production evokes an authentic atmosphere of Rio at Carnival with colorful characters and great views of the city - but the incessant noise and dancing gets tiresome really quick, and then annoying. There are some strong moments and compelling visuals, but the simplistic story is based around an unconvincing love story. Interesting, but falls short of the classic it's been made out to be.
Breno Mello or Breno Higino de Mello, played at Renner Football Club (Soccer Champion Team) in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, when became a idol circa '50. He die from heart attack in 2007.
