Synopsis

Two New York cops get involved in a gang war between members of the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia. They arrest one of their killers and are ordered to escort him back to Japan. In Japan, however, he manages to escape. As they try to track him down, they get deeper and deeper into the Japanese Mafia scene and they have to learn that they can only win by playing the game the Japanese way.

Director

Original

Ridley Scott

One of the most promising directors of the late ‘70s, Ridley Scott displayed stylistic flair and remarkable storytelling abilities in such films as The Duellists (1977) and his landmark Alien (1979). Born in 1937, in Northumberland, England, Scott was educated at the West Hartlepool College of Art and London’s Royal College of Art. After completing his education, he became a set designer for the British Broadcasting Company in the early ’60s, eventually getting promoted to director of such popular BBC series as the long-running police adventure Z Cars. A great old gem of a movie. It might feel a bit slight compared to Scotts other efforts but both Douglas and Garcia works the script for all it´s worth. The visuals and the score are astounding and the action set pieces are pretty cool. A true guilty pleasure in my book.

Not as bad as I was expecting, and I was expecting nothing at all. Some really cool visuals that only a Scott brother can deliver, but other than that its an uninteresting cop flick.

I could've overlooked the horrible screenplay/lackluster direction (not a bad look to the film overall though, superficially), but the constant barrage of American arrogance was so incredibly grating that it killed any potential this film might have had otherwise - it's shoved down your throat at every opportunity. The development of the plot is horrendous, lacking any basis in reality at all. Wear thick gloves.
