Director of animated, combined and experimental films, layout artist, screenwriter, professor. Considered one of the most prominent members of the experimental trend in Polish animation. He was born on the 14th of November 1948 in Poznań.
Neumann’s films use technical tricks, often based upon innovative solutions. They constitute a distinct phenomenon in Polish animation, at the same time being a part of its experimental trend, represented for instance by Zbigniew Rybczyński. Basing to a large extent on actors’ performances, skillfully incorporating after-shot photography, they broaden and sometimes shatter the genre boundaries of animation. As Marcin Giżycki wrote (Hieronim Neumann, Poznań 2009), referring to the definition of the art of animation formed by ASIFA (Association International du Film d’Animation), in the case of Neumann’s works there is problem defining the genre he works in:
