Herschell Gordon Lewis is the author of several books on Direct Mail and Internet marketing. An overall charming gentleman with a PhD in Psychology and the kind of guy, that anybody would love to have as an uncle; Long before he became renowned as a writer and direct response consultant, Herschell helped changed the face of Horror and will without doubt forever be best known as The Godfather of Gore.
Together with former carnie David F. Friedman they formed Mid-Continent Films and made some of the Bloodiest and most profitable movies in history. Lewis took over the directing duties while Friedman acted as a producer,. Their films were mainly aimed at drive-ins, among those early films was the nudie-cutie Boin-n-g (1963) But in the 60’s Nudie Cuties hardly turned a profit and it was time for something new to win the smooching kids attention back…. and that thing was Gore… loads of it!
A brutal killer is on the loose; mutilating and murdering young women in the suburbs of Miami, and the Police are clueless. While women are ordered to stay in their homes, Mrs Fremont arranges a party for her daughter and because she wants something ‘unusual’ she hires local weirdo and exotic caterer Fuad Ramses, who promises her a feast that has not been served in over 5000 years, a festival for the Egyptian Blood Goddess of Ishtar.
As the party approaches more and more women are being mutilated until the police finally get a clue.
A witty Horror comedy with amazingly daring gore effects and buckets of fake red blood. The weird score composed by Lewis himself adds to the comic dramatic spirit of the film.
The campy acting is an obvious influence on John Waters who once called Blood Feast the Citizen Kane of Gore Movies (a sentiment echoed by a character in his film Serial Mom) (5/5)
