John Getz does his best to ruin the whole movie. Otherwise the cast is great.
I was finally able to add this film to my collection. I think it was one of the only Coen Brothers' movies I didn't have. Fortunately for me, unfortunately for them, Blockbuster is closing down two locations near my house. I have been going to each one every few days and I'm finding great deals and even mis-marked blu-rays for $4.99. Anyway...Blood Simple for $1.99 was hard to pass up.
The roots of arguably the greatest pair of directors of their era; a brutal, twisty, neo-noir classic
After watching so many of Coen's work, I didn't expect this movie to be "normal" in a bad way. Right before this, I watched Raising Arizona and I enjoyed that. Blood Simple caught me off guard. It's the most brutal of all Coen movies, but it's sadistic sometimes also. I enjoyed it's pure brutal thinking. Very realistic . Humor has a strong presence.. I'm not sure it's greatness, but its great fun.
Blood Simple has astonished me for some complicated reason which I find tough to elaborate. All I could think of when the movie ended was that I wanted to watch this again as soon as possible!
How to shoot a Film Noir in 1984 ? Ask the Coen brothers, they dit it. With class. They just added to the classic recipe an ounce of black humor, two drops of unrealism, a pinch of brogue and some variations about the word "Blood" which is not as simple as one could imagine. Shake a little, allow to simmer gently during 94 minutes and you'll get the near perfect spaghetti Film Noir. Highly recommended.
I just want to say that this film has possibly the best final 30 seconds of any other.
