Synopsis

George Jung is the son of a struggling small business owner. Seeing his family struggle to make ends meet and failing, George vows never to share a similar fate. Moving to California, he starts his own pot pushing operation in which he finds both success and imprisonment. In prison, he meets a cell-mate who introduces him into a partnership to the lucrative new market in cocaine. Upon release, George Jung quickly becomes instrumental in establishing the exploding US market for cocaine in which he claimed that he handled about 85% of the supply in the 1970s. However, for all the fabulous wealth and power he gained, the true costs of his dangerously treacherous occupation catch up with him in ways from which he would never recover. —IMDb

Original

Ted Demme

Though he was related to Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme, director Ted Demme eschewed any hint of nepotism to gain success in Hollywood through years of hard work. Starting as a production assistant, Demme worked his way up to producer before creating the seminal show “Yo! MTV Raps” (MTV, 1988-1995), which helped introduce hip-hop to the mainstream masses. Demme earned more critical praise for the otherwise ignored “Beautiful Girls” (1996) before taking turn toward more dramatic fare with the impressive “Monument Ave.” (1998). He next won an Emmy Award as one of the producers on “A Lesson Before Dying” (HBO, 1999) while taking the directing reigns for the rather misguided comedy “Life” (1999), starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. Demme received some criticism for “Blow” (2001), his sympathetic take on real-life cocaine… read more

even though subject material is ultimately, pretty depressing, i thought it was kind of a fun take on drug culture. perhaps a little overdone (cinematically), pot to coke to drug lord, but also perhaps saved by the real inspiration. boston accents were so foul it was distracting and johnny depp was heartbreaking as george jung. penelope cruz was just a pretty face, as far as i'm concerned.

A good film, although a bit too much borrowed from "Goodfellas" or "Boogie Nights".

I think this movie’s two most pressing ideas are guilt and risk. What is this character really guilty of? We see the life he lives and, for the most part, we wouldn’t mind living it ourselves. As an…  read review
