Following five years on the heels of their film “Shakespeare Wallah”, which first brought them to fame, the team of Ivory Merchant return to India for yet another Bollywood backstage melodrama, except now in the murky morality of the late ’60s post-colonial era the real challenge is discovering who the real villain is. Thankfully this follow-up is in fully saturated and colorful regalia and slightly lighter and more satirical in its first-act touches. Listen for splashes of psychedelica which set it in its day, from out of nowhere, in what seems like a tragedy decades ahead of its time.
