Never in my life, have I rated a film based on having seen only 10-15 minutes of the film itself. But Braveheart was just THAT BAD where seeing the rest of it wouldn't really matter. Mel Gibson is nothing but a David Lean wannabe who makes epics out to look like History Channel reenactments, and places violence where it doesn't fit. Why this won Best Picture I will never know.
The Mel Gibson hate-train isn't helping this movie's reputation at all, which is disappointing. We don't pay to see how he behaves in real life, we pay to see him direct and act, and he does both exceedingly well here. For me, this is a rousing, heart-winning movie, and nothing's gonna change that. FREEEDDOOOOOMMMM!
Mel Gibson with his lethal weapon mullet + a skirt? Sign me up. I'm surprised the King of England wasn't named Edward Leibowitz
Every once in a blue moon a movie comes along that changes the playing field. Braveheart is an epic film, a staggeringly beautiful period piece rich with character, story and incredible action sequences that were copied (and in some cases continue to be copied) by lesser films ever since. Gibson is a brilliant actor and equally adept behind the camera - what should we expect from our stars but brilliance & despair?
This is a movie in which a lot of men with really bad haircuts get slain in various interesting ways. That's all you need to know, and that's about all it delivers on.
At it's best, the film is an epic in the old Hollywood sense, but most of the time it's just mindless jargon. I give it three stars because it's pretty to look at and makes for great comedy.
although i have a great idea for a gay action movie called bitch slapped :D. jk.
probably the best scenes ive ever seen of a general or commander rallying his troups.
I agree Max, but what film history movie is, astonishing work by Gibson and terrific score make this a must watch.if this was just an action movie and not a historical piece this would get five stars except for the off placed gay romance thing wich is only done briefly and makes the film slightly silly and out of place. Not to gay bash but Im a stickler, gay stuff and action movies dont mix well lol.
Very historically misleading with a horrendous screenplay, but the passion of the Scottish is displayed so emotionally, and the score is absolutely beautiful... which makes this a hard film to rate.
Gave it 3 intead of 4 stars becauase I can´t stand historical imperfections, it is amazing that millions are spent in the making of a movie like this, and it seems that no one bothers to make it historically accurate...after all it is an historical movie...
one of the best epic battle scene movies of all time. up there with gladiator and last of the mohicans. probably the last great mel gibson movie
it took me 3 sittings to rewatch this. fell asleep twice on the most intense battle scenes. not as bad as i remembered from my teens. its much worst. combines most key audiovisual characteristics of epics that followed. slowmo, score, landscape, helicopter shots, staring at the horizon, explicit violence (mix a percentage of all those devices on a single scene & you'll have most of 300 or LOTR or Gladiator ... )
i partook in an intense make-out sesh for the entire duration of this movie. stamina or boredom? you decide
I'm a little confused why people think this movie is well made. The narrative is disjointed -- apparently unintended. The characters are not well fleshed out: they're all one dimensional. The serious scenes are so silly that I can't help but snicker. To be frank, I think even the action scenes are pretty boring.
I watched it way too many times in high school but damnit it's a really good epic. The balance of action, terror, violence, humor, romance and everything else is beautifully done. Gibson is a great director despite his personal life and this is a masterpiece of the genre. William Wallace was a much more convincing Christ-figure than Jesus in The Passion.
Well it's Braveheart, the DVD that always has that weird molting, rotting smell to it; I'm just not a fan of Mel Gibson, crazy sum bitch.
The high standard of the production cannot hide the fact that BRAVEHEART is vile war-mongering shit, and the most viciously homophobic film of recent years to boot. Revolting sentimental romance novel cliches, and naked endorsement of bloody violence as the most sensible solution to any and all problems.
