i was so intrigued by this movie, that i ordered a used vhs copy. while i don’t regret the purchase, there are definitely better efforts by robert altman and co.

it seems like cannon + altman wander through the first hour or so, muddling genre and tone, and not in a good way.

ultimately, a middling first and second act are redeemed by the gorgeous third act. if you happen to find a rare copy/screening like i did, try to resist rolling your eyes through the absurd 20 minute car chase, or getting frustrated at the slapdash narration. the flying scene (at the very end, by the way) and the bizarre credits sequence that follows make it well worth the wait.
