A film that reminds me I was born at least six decades too late. Further proof in the wake of Leans' later, fancier films that repression of thematic feelings, and film style and budget often produces great things.
Makes me cry...every time. One of those movies you wallow in after you break up with your boyfriend.
it had such nice shots. and the music. the poster is fabulous too. but the story aah...if i dint know it before i would have thought he would murder her later or drink her blood the way he was chasing after her.
If it wasn't for the wooden acting and annoying dialogue i might've loved this film. Now, it didn't really arouse much feelings in me. I did enjoy the ending though.
The British 'stiff upper lip'-class has never been highlighted in such a subtle, magnificent and unique way. And chances are slim such a masterpiece will be made again. Chances are zero a grit will have similar results again, on big screen that is.
Absolutely touching movie. It was beautifully shot and written. Highly recommended.
A brilliant tale about two sides of the same the coin that fail to love the greatest love of all. Beautifully written and acted, David Lean's picture is not not only a breeze of fresh air with regards to originality but also one of the most romantic looks at the force of reason over love ever carried on film. Just brilliant.
Before his three hour plus epics, Lean made several smaller, intimate films, and this is one of his best efforts. The haunting score, much like the story itself, flirts between romantic joy and anxiety-ridden tragedy. Easily one of the better films to come out of the UK in the 1940s.
I AM A DAVID LEAN FILMS' lover, Brief Entounter, Lawrence d'Arabia, Doctor Zhibago and etc. etc.. please allow films of that kind which are my favourites. THANKS
One of the most perfectly realised studies of suppressed emotion in the call of duty. Hard to fault on any level.
Laura is searching for something outside of the daily doldrums of her marriage and her "love" for Alec is just an illusion of a perfect escape. This film is sad on the deepest level and depicts an honest image of marriage. Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 is a beautiful, haunting backdrop to an incredible film.
This film is wonderful! I think everything about it is brilliant: the cinematography, the music, the screenplay, the acting. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard are not glamorous looking people, they're rather ordinary; the story is ordinary, but that's what makes it so good. It's a heartbreaking and beautiful film. Recommended!
Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard elicit candor and passion without the need of words, and yet Noel Coward's screenplay is very rich and arouses a huge deal of emotion. All that in the master hand of David Lean signifies a tender and intense romance, a battle inside a woman's heart, captured with the utmost capacity by all those genius and sensitive minds involved in it.
