You can sense the master behind the camera, but there's a strange flatness clinging to every moment (despite all that adrenaline in the editing and execution). I fear a second viewing would prove a slog.
Please, Lord-uh. Bring back I.B. Bangin', Lord-uh. You have the power, Jesus-uh! You have the might-uh! You have the super light-uh! to spare this worthless man.
Up there with the other underrated Scorsese classics The King of Comedy and After Hours. It's Brilliant.
My first Scorsese (oh to be 15 again). Still 1 of my personal favorites of his'.Probably the last film in which one could perceive "Scorsese, the Director", rather than "Scorsese, the studio slave". Still remember the fondness of the line "oh to be on a woman's WC and see all those different soaps" (somethin' like this). I thought that line was great. And Nicolas Cage showed me a side of him that I did not know of.
I don't detest the film, as Orangey does; I think Cage's mumbling baritone is well suited for this descent into hell. However, for a far better film about ambulance drivers on a collision course with life, check out Todd Field's "Broken Vessels," which centers on two young junkie EMTs.
Truly an underrated masterpiece. Visceral, vibrant, full of color and life, New York setting, and a fantastic soundtrack that features R.E.M., The Clash, and even something from Quadrophenia! This is the spiritual successor to Taxi Driver and seemingly the last great film Scorsese will make.
Cinematography, sound design and editing in this film is so beautiful, plus the opening scene is one of the best ever and the scene where they suddenly show Patricia Arquette from the front and both sides <3 ..but GOD Nicolas Cage is a HORRIBLE actor. Plus the plot sucks so hardcore.
I'm always amused by the lengths to which viewers/reviewers go avoiding the Catholic heart of this film. My favorite shot in the film is the "pizza" scene around the time when Cage offers a slice to Arquette. In a highly stylized moment, the camera jump cuts into a trinity of shots. Brilliant.
A pretty damn good film. Now Nicholas Cage is usually shit, but Scorsese figured out that Cage is only good when he does voice overs. Their are some really over the top stuff, like the crash and his flashbacks. But Scorsese did a good job.
