Synopsis

Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains pop off the screen in vivid Technicolor in Gabriel Pascal’s adaptation of Shaw’s 1901 play about love and politics in ancient Rome and Egypt. At the time the most expensive British film ever produced (complete with real imported Egyptian sand), Caesar and Cleopatra is a lavish epic, featuring a screenplay adapted by Shaw himself and mesmerizing performances by its two stars. —The Criterion Collection

Theatrical and extravagant drama with a flimsy performance by Vivian Leigh who comes across as a naive English schoolgirl than unconvincingly switching into her signature acting. The only reason to see this film is Shaw's screenplay and the reliable Claude Rains.

1. Why so whimsical? 2. Fascinating to place this film in context to bombing raids on England by Nazi Germany.
