This biopic traces the life and career of Primo Carnera, a one-time world heavyweight champion in both boxing and pro wrestling — and the only man in sports history so far to achieve that distinction. From an impoverished childhood to a brief career as a circus strongman to worldwide athletic fame, Carnera is that rare figure whose legend matches his stature. Burt Young and F. Murray Abraham co-star as the men who made him and destroyed him.
Renzo Martinelli was born in 1948 in Milan, Italy. In the 70s he established a production company and after a lot of work in documentary and advertising, his debut in cinema appeared in 1993. In 2000 he directed VAJONT, which received awards and recognition at major film festivals and exhibitions: a Golden Globe from the foreign press for best direction, a David of Donatello for best film, a Golden Cup at St. Vincent for best film, Silver Ribbon to Leo Gullotta for best supporting role, and the Fellini Prize. In 2007 he finished the movie CARNERA, which is considered the most important post-production job ever made in Europe. —SIFF
