Director Clint Eastwood’s period drama gets off to a conventional start, but after a few original plot twists really hits its stride and becomes a smart and engrossing mystery. Excellent performances from a cast of both familiar and unfamiliar faces, and superb cinematography, production design, and some subtly amazing special effects recreates 1920s Los Angeles. It has its flaws – it’s too long, some the of the characters/plot elements were underdeveloped – but this is another solid piece of work from Clint Eastwood.
