Looking back at the life of José Lewgoy (1920-2003), one of Brazil’s most important actors, one can identify the various phases the country’s cinema and television went through. Originally from a small town in the rural south of Brazil – Alfredo Chaves, currently known as Veranópolis –, the actor had a rare international career. He went from the Atlântida studio’s “chanchadas” to French Cinema in the ‘50s, from Cinema Novo with Glauber Rocha and Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo (1982) to Rede Globo’s soap operas.
