new criterion transfer on blu ray exceptional
Perhaps my favourite film of the nineties. Wong Kar-Wai's 'Chungking Express' seemed to come out of nowhere in 1994 in comparison with everything else coming out of Hong Kong and China. It delivered on the promise of his two previous features and surpassed them. One knew even then that one was watching the arrival of a worldclass talent. The exceptional cinematography married with a script beyond expectation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fupwLxOjwfE This is way better than Wong Kar-Wai's film.
This masterpiece is the film that gave Wong Kar-Wai an international profile and has to be one of the best films of the 90's. The story of two cops and the women they encounter is supremely stylish, unconventional and dazzlingly original. Critics at the time compared it to the early films of Godard and I think that's a good comparison. Quentin Tarantino loves this film, but don't let that put you off watching it.....
Going through my binge of WKW's filmography, while I do see why it was a historical and iconic film especially as a cultural marker of early '90s Hong Kong, I found it more adorable and nice rather than something that sticks in my mind like "Happy Together" or "In the Mood for Love". Still a wonderful movie with memorable usage of music.
It's so stylistic; everything from the cinematography, to the acting, and direction. The frenetic atmosphere makes this a highly enjoyable film. The two halves seem as an homage to classic Hollywood genres; the first half is shaped as a neonoir and Brigitte Lin is the femme fatale. The second half as a romantic comedy is priceless as Faye Wong, in a very Ameliesque way breaks into Leung's apartment So sweet, so good.
i would say amelie is faye-esque. i love them both but i'm convinced the amelie character is inspired by faye wong's character.
I worded it like that because I thought more people would know Amelie, but looking back, I guess I could have said Faye inspired Amelie.
A star for the concept of expiration dates. Another star for cop 663 talking to inanimate objects (I found this somewhat crazy, but really poetic). Third star for Faye Wong breaking into cop 663's apartment ala Amelie (except this time, to fix someone's life the only way she knows how). And finally, a star for California Dreaming.
a meaningless one second called love that can turn upside down your entire world. the way wong kar-wai shoots his movies, the contrasts of colors and the choice of music, still surprises me.
My first experience on Wong Kar Wai's film, and I loved this movie! Simply fantastic. I agree with one of the critics who said that it is riveting and engaging from the first shot till the end credits. And there's some amazing quotes also :)
Artsy. This film brings stylistically with the effective camerawork that captures mood and tone. I also love the quirks of the characters. However, the film doesn't do much in terms of plot. It's much more about mood and an experiment in film technique. The pacing is deliberately slow and repetitive to confuse the audiences and adds to the mood of depression and loneliness. A little bit drags on. Both plus and minus.
Self indulgent film making at its most irritating. I loved the free wheeling unpredictability of the first half, but the second was so buried under style that I couldn't connect with the characters at all. A rare disappointment in the career of Wong Kar Wai.
I couldn't help but feel the same way and I love this dude. I know its one of his more acclaimed films but I'd take just about every film he's ever done except for "As Tears Go By" ahead of this one.
Watched this film for perhaps the sixth time Friday night, with a newcomer to Wong Kari-wai. Man this film holds up.
Finally saw Chungking Express, and I am sure am glad I saw it. Truly an amazing movie and I will definitely check out more of Wong Kar-Wai's other films.
Oh goodness, I loved it when he talked to the soap bar and the rag and the apartment. Like poetry, giving inanimate things feelings: "Did I leave the tap running or is the apartment getting more tearful? I always thought it would cope okay. Didn't expect it to cry so much. When people cry they can dry their eyes with tissues. But when an apartment cries it takes a lot to mop it up."
Cute. Faye Wong is like a young HK version of Meg Ryan. But where did the chick in the wig and the adorably pathetic guy who ate all the pineapple go?
