Which version did you see? The director's cut is exactly as you say, but the theatrical version ends earlier, and beautifully.
Beautiful movie about life, about what life consists of. One of the best movies of all times, for sure!
Passion for cinema and how! A must see for every enthusiast, passionate cine-ite!!
This movie helped me realise that Tornatore is in fact a tearjerking-seeker director, that relise on sympathy from the public for it's one dimensional charachters that do nothing that mime pathetic emotions. It seems that making a 3 hour film hasn't helped solving the many "problems" Salvadore came upon, Tornatore just took the easy way and made the most hollywood-like ending he could come up with. 3 stars
One of the very best films I have ever seen, everything about it is just so perfect, this is the film that made me love film.
One of the very best films I have ever seen! Everything about it is just so perfect! The story, the script, the performances, and the direction. It takes a simple concept and uses it to touch on various different emotions. It grabs you like no other film! Just an overall great movie, certainly one of the best I have ever seen!
проблески гениальности безнадежно погребены под тоннами бессмысленного сюжетного мусора
A very touching movie without being too melodramatic, this is a 150minutes of laughter, friendship, families, love and some heartwrenching scenes. Very good portrait of the earlier period of cinemas and a nice love story here
Two things happened as soon as the credits started rolling: I started crying, and then I gave this movie a standing ovation. By myself. In my empty house. This is my new favorite movie of all time.
One of the finest films from the 1980's. A true portrait of life, love, and growing up through the eyes of a young man. And like other greats from Italy like Railroad Man and Bicycle Thief, the father-son dynamic can be seen in this film between Toto and Alfredo. A really beautiful film that shows that Cinema can be an illustration of feelings.
I hate the movie like you.But the first part (less than an hour) with the child is not so bad ;)
If that's your opinion then you completely missed the point of the film. I'm sorry, you just did. The ENTIRE MORAL of the movie completely flies in the face of sentimentality and nostalgia.
A true love letter to the movies. A movie for movie buffs. Tornatore has made some interesting films since but never with the passion or honesty of this early film. Beware the extended original cut which proves the importance of a good editor. The pacing of the north american release version ensured its success while the original cut got mired down in melodrama and fake sentimantality. An emotional powerhouse.
A mockery of everything that was good about Italian cinema. The kissing montage could have stood alone and nothing would have been lost.
Ugh, I did not like this film. To me, it was much to sentimental, in a way that made me feel all yucky.
Enjoyed the first half, but the second half is CRAP. And the overwhelming score made my ears bleed. Ugh.
