Good story from one of the darkest history of China, should have been better. Cinematography is beautiful in black and white. Performances is kinda standard. The movie itself is the power
A shocking indictment of the Japanese past and a shocking indictment of human beings in general this brutal telling of the Nanking massacres and invasion is an incredibly impressive third feature by Lu Chuan. Beautifully filmed, viscerally captured and astonishingly evocative this is a kick to the guts and a punch in the face for filmgoers. Outstanding filmmaking.
overrated movie, too much demonstrative. way inferior to the masterpiece guizi lai le/devils on the doorstep!
Begins as "Saving Private Ryan", evolves into "Schindler's List". Well made, nicely filmed in black and white but doesn't have a strong enough through line to rise above simply depicting a series of horrible events.
Do you still entertain illusions in the faith and capacity for humans to feel for one another?
A friend told me of another film dealing with the same subject released in the late Eighties, entitled MEN BEHIND THE SUN. Everything I've read and heard about it tells me that it's something I will never see, as it's an exploitation film with no real merit. Having just seen CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH two days ago, I can say with confidence that it is anything but. A film with an epic scale, but somber, stirring, human.
Disturbing document of Japan's overtaking of the Chinese at Nanking. All the elements of prestige are in place: stirring music used sparingly, classic black and white cinematography, a real subject with a war theme. A frightening real life event is a grueling 2 plus hour film that can't help but be admired.
Rarely do films touch me the way this one did. A haunting and very disturbing image of a part of history I never knew about. Apart from the striking techniques Lu used to create an atmosphere of pure horror, what stuck most was "Let them go. Life is more difficult than death." Thought-provoking till the end.
A stark and haunting telling of the massacre of Nanking, the Chinese capitol invaded by the Japanese in WWII. The battle scenes are appropriately harrowing, but the real power is in the film's devastating 2nd half. Shot in striking black and white, the film is a stirring portrait of wartime terrors, and of humanity amidst unspeakable tragedy.
wonderful direction and recreation of the period.......a real artistic movie that takes you away from your seat to one of the darkest and worst period and place in the modern human history.though , I am not sure to what extent its sticking or fair with the real events because I have never heared the Japanese side or point of view to what happened and what led to that inhuman acts that happened in Nanjing.
wena...."la vida es mas dificultosa que la muerte" No me gustan mucho las pelis de guerra, pero esta está rewena. blanco y negro, buen sonido, casi nada de dialogo...fuerte...wena
Its getting harder for me to watch this kind of movie which involves violence against women and children. After watching this, it reminded me on a quote i heard sometime ago, why are we so hell bent to destroy our female population? Rapes, murders, prostitutions. Its uglier when it involves a war. Sigh.
