I thought I “got” Eric Rohmer after watching My Night at Maud’s (which I liked), but now I don’t know. This movie was completely trivial and the philosophizing was just so heavyhanded and artificial. The characters were examining themselves like lab rats and they had so many supposed insights on their motivations, as if they could really think that clearly about themselves. I also never believed anything the characters said, I disliked the main guy who was so confident of himself.

Also, what is with this constant flirtation between EVERY man and woman? It’s like they’re all friends but they sit so close together and whisper into each other’s ear you’d think they were all lovers. And yet they’re not. And they kiss each other and nuzzle themselves in their necks. Is this just the French, or is this just Rohmer trying to be risque?

Anyway, the actual “substance” of this movie felt so inconsequential, and almost bourgeois, that it was kinda annoying the whole way through. I didn’t hate it, but it felt kind of like a major waste of time.
