Shot in real time Varda employs all her tricks to deliver a film of quality and resonance
I found this film took a realistic look on the relationships between men and women. Very identifiable. It really cleared my mind.
Possibly the most compressed love story in the history of cinema, but strangely enough, I bought it.
A great submission from the French New Wave. I especially enjoyed the cameos by Jean-Luc Godard, Anna Karina, Eddie Constantine and Jean-Claude Brialy in the "film-within-a-film". I did a double take when I realized it was them, especially Godard lol. The cinematography was astounding, and I loved the final shot. This should have been called "Cleo from 5 to 6:30" though, and those who saw the film know why.
a beautiful portrait of a humble singer awaiting a biopsy. mixed with dread, superstitions, and despair, this movie takes place in a full day of her life. I love the part where Cleo is thinking that being beautiful means she must be healthy as everyone else is, its a shell which she can hide inside of. the illness isn't breaking her exterior. but soon everyone is staring at her, looking for the illness
An intriguing character study about a vain and glamorous woman who we get to follow for the entire ninety minutes. What works so well is that Cleo becomes vulnerable as the film progresses, waiting impatiently to find out whether or not she has cancer. The end I won't spoil, but the film is worth watching. Michel Legrand makes a memorable cameo, and the song she sings chills me thinking about it.
Make a movie about women. It's a simple idea but only Varda had the bravery and skill to do it right.
Loved it, and I know I have to see it again soon so I can catch the little details I've missed this first time.
the word masterpiece was invented for such a work. the camera is something else in varda's hands, a tool by which to create poetry. she manages to delve into time, life and death as well as the nature of fame in a metropolitan film. a cute little cameo from godard and karina too. the work of a true auteur, and possibly the greatest masterpiece of the new wave and the rive gauche.
Corinne Marchand is really beautiful. The soundtrack is great. But I'm not satisfied with this movie
