If its appropriation of 9/11 imagery is cheap then its impact is a bargain. Composed of fragments that register subconsciously, the subjective style evokes the contemporary horror of witnessing the catastrophic while lacking the guidance of authority, be it a politician or an omniscient camera. Collateral damage to monuments may be cliché, but DV finally gives Lady Liberty's decapitation a power beyond the symbolic.
I would have prefered more subtlety. The explicit display of monsters constrains the potential horror.
Of all the "found footage" subgenre of films, this one's the best in my opinion. Severely underrated and undeservedly hated.
Loved everything about this film, only seen it a couple times but the scenes from this film are very vivid in my mind. Really nice take on the pov genre.
Perhaps the best visualisation of what it would be like to be in a city as a monster attacked. But it's purely a visualisation, despite the admirable attempts to make us care about the characters.
Went with a group of friends and one of ‘em suggested to see it. My golly, i could never stand shaky cam no matter how great the story is.
This film is terrifying. I don't think "popcorn film" is a phrase that should be attached to it. It's far too haunting and prescient. This film attaches itself to the conscience of the current world so effectively, often subliminally, through images that burn themselves into the mind. The associations its images make with the key images of this young century move this into the realm of 21st century masterpiece.
It spends way too much time setting up the personal relationships of a pretty annoying cast - including an unconvincing romantic subplot that stretches throughout, but once the destruction gets started, the fun begins. An original concept with some dazzling special effects, for shear monster movie blockbuster spectacle, this one delivers. It's flaws are clear, but it's enough explosive fun to be worth it.
OKay... I loved this movie. It's a cool sci-fi monster movie, and lots of stuff explodes, and I enjoyed it. The film was a nice variation on The Monster Movie with a very human. It's not Shakespeare, but it's enjoyable.
Quite dashing. Simple story with ingenious camera work and special effects. Their theme is seems almost synonymous to the Godzilla films in Japan. Good cast but the acting could've been done better.
Its okay to pass the time. But if you really want to see a movie, an actual movie, this is absolutely not a good choice. I mean, come on.."IT'S ALIVE!!!" thats pathetic.
I want 85 minutes of my life back. This is a royal waste of time. The protagonists come across as shallow idiots. I was rooting for the monster the whole time. The only thing that was satisfying about the film was the ending -- since your misery (watching the film) was over.
This is just my kind of movie. I irrationally love cinema verite, so a monster movie done in this style caters to me very well. Great pacing, and really fun (especially if you like watching the world collapse).
this is a bit like blair witch best watched on a low quality copy 4 more authenticity
The marketing campaign far surpassed the film in its quality. Not bad but it's a pretty standard monster movie.
